Skin Tag Banding: How Long Until It Falls Off? (Day-by-Day)

You've banded a skin tag (or you're about to) and want to know exactly what happens next. Here's the realistic timeline most people experience with the ligation method.

The short answer

7–14 days for most tags. Small tags (2–4 mm) often detach around day 7–10; larger tags (8–12 mm) can take the full two weeks, occasionally a few days more.

Day-by-day: what's normal

  • Day 1: Band on. Light pinching pressure for the first hours is normal and fades. The tag may swell slightly.
  • Days 2–3: Colour change begins — deep red, then purple. This is the blood supply stopping: the method working, not an infection.
  • Days 4–6: The tag turns dark brown or black and starts to shrivel. It looks worst right before it's done — totally normal. (Worried about the black colour? We wrote a whole post on it: skin tag turned black after banding.)
  • Days 7–10: The tag is dry, hard, and hanging by less each day.
  • Days 10–14: It detaches on its own — often you just find it gone after a shower. A small pink mark fades over the following weeks.

What speeds it up (and what doesn't)

Helps: correct band size snug at the stalk's base — this matters more than anything. Keeping the area clean and dry. Leaving it completely alone.

Doesn't help: tugging the tag "to check," adding a second band on top, or trimming it early. Pulling a tag off before it's ready is the one way to turn a painless process into a bleeding one.

When to take the band off and reassess

  • No colour change at all after 3–4 days — the band isn't tight enough at the base. Remove it and reapply with the next smaller band size.
  • Spreading redness of the surrounding skin, pus, or real pain — rare, but remove the band and have it looked at.

Doing this with the right tools

Timeline problems almost always trace back to band fit. The Auto Tagless Kit includes bands in three sizes and an applicator pen that seats the band at the base on the first click — which is most of the battle. $19.99, free worldwide shipping, 30-day money-back guarantee.

For external skin tags on adults. If a growth changes in ways not described here, see a dermatologist. Not medical advice.
