That Viral Skin Tag Pen on Instagram & TikTok: What It Actually Is

A skin tag video found you on Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, you watched a tag disappear in a 15-second clip, and now you're searching. Important thing to know before you buy anything: two completely different devices get sold as "skin tag pens" in those feeds — and they could hardly be more different.

Type 1: Band (ligation) pens — the gentle kind

A spring applicator places a tiny elastic band at the tag's base. The band stops the tag's blood supply; it darkens and falls off in 7–14 days. Nothing is burned, frozen or cut — the mechanism is pressure, which is why it's painless and why the surrounding skin is untouched (full explanation). This is the method clinics use in principle, and the category Dermly, TagBand and our own Tagless kit belong to.

Type 2: Plasma / cautery pens — the burning kind

Electric pens that generate a heat spark to burn tissue off. They're also heavily advertised in social feeds, often at similar prices — and they're the ones dermatologists keep warning about: burns, blistering, scarring, pigment damage, and the deeper problem of people cauterising growths nobody ever identified. We wrote the full caution separately: plasma pens on skin tags.

How to tell which one the video showed

  • Band pen: you'll see a tiny ring/band left sitting at the base of the tag after the click; the "after" is days later.
  • Plasma pen: you'll see a metal needle tip, sparks or smoke, and instant scabbing — often with gloves and numbing cream in frame.

Social-video buying rules (any brand, including ours)

  1. Those "it fell off in the shower!" clips compress 10 days into 15 seconds — real banding looks like this timeline, dark-tag phase included.
  2. Some viral testimonial videos in this niche have been shown to be AI-generated — judge kits by specs (band sizes, materials, refund terms), not by faces in ads.
  3. Countdown timers and "50% off today only" run permanently. Ignore the clock, check the product.
  4. Before any purchase: confirm what you have is a skin tag.

If the video that got you here showed a band pen — the gentle kind — that's what we make: Tagless, $19.99, three band sizes, free worldwide shipping, 30-day guarantee.
